World AIDS Day, observed every December 1st each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Recent repots shows AIDS killing more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007.

An estimated 33 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world.

AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 2 million lives in 2007 of which about 270,000 were children. The concept of a World AIDS Day originated at the 1988 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. Since then, it has been taken up by governments, international organizations and charities around the world. Fighting this epidemic is one of the top priorities facing public health workers around the world.

What strategy should be used with limited resources? Today, a vaccine for AIDS is years away from possibility. So should resources go towards improving the health of those with AIDS or should funds be used to reduce the incidence of the disease?

The first case of AIDS was reported in the United States in 1981. It is caused by the virus HIV, which kills or impairs the cells of the immune system. Once diagnosed with AIDS, an individual's body becomes unable to combat certain infections, illnesses, and types of cancer, including some that would not normally affect a person who is uninfected with AIDS.
